Uploading (or importing) audio files into Anchor

If you have pre-existing audio (like a podcast, interview, voice memo, or video file) or if you prefer to pre-record and edit your audio with advanced software, you can upload your audio files directly to your Anchor account.

We also have the option for you to convert your video files to audio files, which you can by following the instructions below.

For certain creators, we now additionally offer the ability to upload video files directly, which you can find more about here.

Please note: If you’re uploading your own MP3 files, we recommend keeping embedded artwork, ID3v2 tags, and other metadata to as small a file size as possible.

Supported file types and limits

  • mp3

  • m4a

  • wav

  • mpg

  • mp4

  • mov

Currently, our web uploading is limited to a maximum file size of 250 MB; this includes audio extracted from video files. As a rule of thumb, the limit for videos is up to a 3 hour play length. If you have a file that's larger than 250 MB, it's a good idea to compress it before uploading!

If you're using one of these supported kinds of audio and getting an error during upload, check:

  1. That the audio plays properly on your computer, and

  2. That your browser supports the file type.

Having trouble locating your uploaded audio? Be sure to check your 'Library' section.

Note: It's against Anchor's Terms of Service to upload audio that is copyrighted or belongs to someone else to your podcast.

  • Locate your episode builder on the right hand side under 'Save Episode'

  • Either drag and drop your file into the episode builder, or click on 'Click to upload or drag files here' to browse for your audio file

  • This will add your audio file to your episode, where you can add other audio segments and create your episode

  • If you upload an MP3 on the web version of Anchor, and that file is the only segment in an episode, that exact same file will be passed raw to your RSS feed

  • Once extracted, your audio file will appear in your episode builder and will have the label "(Audio only)" next to the file name. This will help you distinguish between your normal audio files and video files where the audio was extracted

  • From here you can treat this audio as you would a normal audio segment. You can edit it, change the order of where it appears in your episode builder, save your episode, publish your episode, etc. Note: your segment will also save and can be found in your purple library folder. It will again include the label "(Audio only)" followed by the file name as pictured below
