Uploading (or importing) audio files into Anchor

If you have pre-existing audio (like an edited podcast, interview, or voice memo) or if you prefer to pre-record and edit your audio with advanced software, you can upload your audio files directly to your Anchor account.

For certain creators, we now additionally offer the ability to upload video files directly, which you can find more about here. We also have the option for you to convert your video files to audio files, which you can do by following the instructions below.

Note: Video uploading is available to creators in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. For creators located outside of our supported markets, you will only be able to convert video into audio. You will not be able to upload video. You can apply for the waitlist for Video Podcasts here!

Supported file types and limits

Currently, our web uploading is limited to a maximum file size of 250 MB; this includes audio extracted from video files. As a rule of thumb, the limit for videos is up to a 3 hour play length. If you have a file that's larger than 250 MB, it's a good idea to compress it before uploading!

Our supported file types are as follows:

  • MP3
    • If you upload an MP3 on the web version of Anchor, and that file is the only segment in an episode, that exact same file will be passed exactly to your RSS feed.
    • If you’re uploading MP3 files, we recommend keeping embedded artwork, ID3v2 tags, and other metadata to as small a file size as possible.
  • M4A
  • WAV
  • MPG
  • MOV
  • MP4

If you're using one of these supported kinds of files and are getting an error during upload, check:

  1. That the audio plays properly on your computer, and
  2. That your browser supports the file type.

Having trouble locating your uploaded audio? Be sure to check your 'Library' section.

How to upload audio files into Anchor

There are two ways to upload audio files on Anchor web. Once you click the ‘New Episode’ button, you will see ‘Create an episode’ or ‘Quick Upload’.

On web (‘Create an episode’ option):

This allows you to use different segments and explore your audio library. You can drag and drop the segments in the episode builder!

  • Click ‘New episode’ on the right-hand side of your screen, then click ‘Create an episode’
  • Locate your episode builder on the right hand side under 'Save changes'
  • Either drag and drop your file into the episode builder, or click on 'Click to upload or drag files here' to browse for your audio file
  • This will add your audio file to your episode, where you can add other audio segments and create your episode
    • This is useful if you want to use the Music tool or include any segments from your Library
  • Once you’re finished, you can click ‘Save changes’ where you will be taken to the ‘Episode Options’ page where you can edit your title, description, and more before publishing

On web (‘Quick upload’ option):

This is best for folks who just have one big file or segment to submit. You can skip all the frills and jump right into publishing!

  • Click ‘New episode’ on the right-hand side of your screen, then click ‘Quick upload’
  • After clicking this option, your computer will open the file picker within your operating system
  • Navigate in your files until you find the correct file you’d like to upload
    • Click ‘Done’ once you’ve selected your file
  • The file you’ve uploaded will begin Uploading, and then will enter Processing
  • Once the file has processed, you’ll be able to publish your episode
    • If you selected the wrong file by mistake, you have the option to ‘Remove’ the file on the ‘Episode options’ screen.
    • You will then be able to open the file picker on your computer in the ‘Episode content’ section

On mobile:

  • From the home screen (create screen), tap the '+' sign to access your creation tools, then tap the 'Library' tool

  • Tap the 'Import' button at the top right of the screen

  • Either search or browse for the audio file you're looking to import

  • Select the file you're looking to import and the import process will start

You can also share audio files to Anchor from any app on your phone. Directions can vary for each app.

How to convert video files into audio

Please note that we don’t support video podcasts for all creators at this time. This option is specifically to convert video files into audio files using Anchor.

On web:

  • Click ‘New Episode’ on the right-hand side of your screen, then click ‘Create an episode’
  • Locate your episode builder on the right hand side under 'Save changes'
  • Either drag and drop your file into the episode builder, or click on 'Click to upload or drag files here' to browse for your video file
  • Once you have added your video file to the episode builder, we will begin extracting the audio from your video file
  • Once extracted, your audio file will appear in your episode builder and will have the label "(Audio only)" next to the file name. This will help you distinguish between your normal audio files and video files where the audio was extracted.
  • From here you can treat this audio as you would a normal audio segment. You can edit it, change the order of where it appears in your episode builder, save your episode, publish your episode, etc. Note: your segment will also save and can be found in your purple library folder. It will again include the label "(Audio only)" followed by the file name as pictured below

Note: It's against Anchor's Terms of Service to upload audio that is copyrighted or belongs to someone else to your podcast.
