Recording tips and microphone compatibility

Recording audio for your podcast has never been easier with Anchor!

We recommend using your smartphone device to record directly. You already have a very powerful, noise canceling microphone in your pocket - no expensive equipment required.

Tips for recording with your phone:

  1. Hold the phone up to your ear for the best quality, and to block out background noise
  2. Your phone will do most of the work for you, but if you really want to remove background noise completely, try covering any hard surfaces like floors and walls with blankets and pillows
  3. Be sure to hold the phone close to your mouth, whether you're recording in telephone mode or speaker mode (and if you're recording in person with others, make sure it's close to whoever's speaking)
  4. For more tips check out this episode of 'I Should Start a Podcast'!

Record on the go with a microphone

We also support most smartphone mics and bluetooth equipment for recording! If a mic works with your phone, it should also work to record with Anchor. (If you have any trouble connecting your existing mic to Anchor, just let us know.)

If you want to use a USB mic, that should work too; just find the right adaptor for your phone.

We don't typically recommend using headsets of any kind to record, as they are typically for phone calls and might not work well when using Anchor.

Please also note that microphones are not supported with our Record with Friends feature.

Desktop recording

If you have an existing desktop setup, you can use that with Anchor too! Either record directly from the Anchor episode builder, or record in your preferred desktop software and upload your audio file directly to Anchor!

If you're looking for great, beginner-friendly audio editing software, we really like Audacity and Garage Band, but there are a ton of great options out there.
